to plan is to embrace change

The best cozy plans often have other ideas. Last weekend we found ourselves at the ER with our aging family member, enduring hours of waiting in uncomfortable chairs with questionable food choices, and a complete upheaval of everything we’d hoped the weekend would be. It wasn’t a fun time (is it ever?), but I’m pleased to report he was discharged yesterday and we have a new care plan. In the moment it felt like a brick wall stopping us while the rest of the world kept moving forward.

I’m very thankful to all the reasons and people who made it possible for me to actually go out and brave Times Square on a very very cold Sunday morning. The day didn’t unfold the way I’d envisioned, but I’m thankful for what I was able to do.

Sometimes the thing that fills you back up isn’t what you planned. Sometimes it’s the people who hug you when you’re running on fumes, who don’t ask questions when you show up masked and tired, who just get it. I wrote more about it over at little acorn creations if you’re interested.

Whatever fills you up, embrace it when you can. It doesn’t matter if it’s the quiet cozy weekend you planned or the community that catches you when plans fall apart. Do what you need to do. Please take care of yourself so you can take care of everyone else.

Stay warm again this weekend. We’re in for dangerous windchills and strong winds.
