two for today
An eclectic assortment of books has passed through here recently. There must be a trend in them, however, I’m not sure what it is. Below are two grouped together mostly because I’m perplexed about them. I didn’t enjoy them to the extend others have, and I’m not sure what to write about either. All I can really determine is that both fall under the popular heading, albeit different populars.
How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe
by Charles Yu
While Minor Universe 31 is not the universe I thought it was, I found Yu’s approach to writing this story novel and unique. It was a rough go, at times I didn’t quite appreciate the method, but I think Yu has something write.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
by Stieg Larsson
I’m not sure what to say for this one. I’ve heard the translation isn’t that good. I’ve heard it’s a good translation. I don’t know, but I found the English version okay for a fun escape read. I’ve heard it’s a movie (yeah, even I heard that). It’s interesting, multi layered, and I did stay up late to finish it, but I’m not sure what makes it really unique and a must read.
Have you picked up a book lately and been surprised (good or bad) by it?
