Current favourite place

While I don’t (yet) have that nice gable with a sunny afternoon corner where I can sit, sip tea, and knit, I do have a favourite place. Surprisingly it isn’t on a train, though I do love a good long train ride with some nice knitting.*

I look forward to my weekly trek to the laundry room in the basement of my building to wash our clothes (I’m constantly surprised at how much dirty clothing two people can create) and knit. Perhaps it’s the reassuring rhythm of the machines, but I have almost always found laundry a pleasant household duty. The smells, the sounds, the freshness as I take it off a line (or these days out of a dryer) it’s my favourite part of ‘keeping house’. In any case, these days I spend the entire time — when possible — in the laundry room and knit. My knitting has bridged language barriers (both Spanish and 18-month-old) and brought a smile to someone rushing to just get that chore done.

How about you? Do you have an unexpected favourite place to knit?

I’m still dreaming for my perfect space with a nice sunbeam and a cat purring nearby, but for now I’ll take the hum of the washing machine and dryer.

* did you catch the train documentary on wliw the other day? I want to ride them all!!!!!

  1. I love doing laundry, too! I even like the smell of fresh laundry from the dryer – and I use unscented softener sheets! There’s something very satisfying about drawers and closets full of fresh clothing. It’s almost atavistic.

  2. Count me in as a fan of laundry! My laundry room is in the basement, no windows, but getting things cleaned, folded, put away in an orderly way… all while knitting between cycles, or reading.

I’m so glad I have this Saturday to myself!

  3. The playground used to be my favorite place. I’d sit in the sun (or shade when hot) with an audiobook and my spinning or knitting while the kids played.

Now it is my balcony during the warm months.

I do like the laundry room but it is not always as peaceful as I’d like it to be.
