food: of potato and potato and more

Well, I’ve eaten a TON of potato this week in various forms (mostly whole & roasted or of starch) … I won’t deny at all I’m looking forward to a big bowl of rice next week. :)

Here are two other things we’ve been eating this past week:

First up is spelt shmurah matzoh. Yum! (No really, I like matzoh).

Second is a cake mix. This one supposedly is chocolate chip cake. I don’t believe the boxes and we’ll see what’s inside. The ingredients are pretty simple: sugar, potato starch, chocolate chips, salt, sodium bicarbonate, monocalcium phosphate, vanillin [sic], and cinnamon. E will actually eat these so I make them. One only needs 2-3 eggs (depending on the mix) and a ½ cup of oil. Oh and a pan.

If you see time stamps on my pictures which seems to say they were taken before shabbos ended, I give up. I just realized however that it is still set that way from our December trip. *SIGH* one day I’ll remember that the camera isn’t that smart and that when I get home I need to reset it!

Lastly, here’s[photopress:stash1_2007.jpg,thumb,alignright] some of my stash. I’m a week behind, but perhaps I’ll take more pictures tonight (sorry I know if I don’t do it now I won’t, so no natural light) and put it all up tomorrow. This is a ball of Lion Kitchen Cotton in Sage Green. Until recently it was almost a baby sweater. It will be reborn as a Baby Surplice Jacket in time. Once I figure out the pattern and get used to it. I seem cursed by certain patterns (everything EZ) and certain yarn (the merino lace) .. my fingers are itching to work on swallowtail and to do more than sketch out plans for a lacey gift.. :) I’m happy I found the shawl. I was really starting to wonder. In cleaning up my stash this week I did do some frogging. The BSJ is gone as is the baby sweater that this ball of cotton was to be. I feel better but am still frustrated. I need to figure out a good storage system, the current version of which I will NOT be sharing with the public. Let’s just say it consists of a shoe holder in the coat closet (mostly for WIPs) a plastic bin in the bedroom which also holds sewing stuff, one of the shelves of my desk, and a very large bin which bothers E very much. (Apparently so does my knitting in public. He’s a muggle. He sleeps on the train so I cannot see how my knitting and staying awake is any worse. He claims I close myself off from the world. Only when knitting lace under a deadline. Of lace, I only knit it at home. It’s safer for the world that way. ;) )

  1. Lace knitting looks like so much fun. I really want to start something lacy soon. Maybe just a pair of feather & fan socks will do to start me off…

  2. You’re only closing yourself off if you wear headphones and glare at people who try converse with you whilst you’re knitting (er, like me!). And, anyway, how does he expect you to ever knit anything for him, if you can’t knit on the subway?? That’s prime knitting time!

  3. I bought a Lieber’s cake mix this year, just because I couldn’t contain my curiosity as to how a non-gebrochts cake-from-a-box would taste. It wasn’t bad – claimed to be coffee cake, but the crumb topping was coconut (?) The kids liked it. And by the way, I’m not sure vanillin is an error. I’ve seen it on other pre-packaged (non heimish at that) foods. OK, I went and “looked it up” – on google, of course. Here’s what wikipedia had to offer:

Vanillin, methyl vanillin, or 4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C8H8O3.

So how was the choc. chip cake? Curious minds want to know.

  4. Potatoes but no latkes??
