wednesday’s knitting

Wow. I’m actually getting a post out on Wednesday pertaining to knitting. There will be horrid pics. It’s cloudy out. I didn’t get a new pic of the socks. I’m wearing them. Despite not weaving in any of the ends. The scarf I made a few weeks back? I haven’t woven in that end either. *sigh*

I have learned to use the word ‘impossible’ with the greatest caution.

(Thanks for the quotes Stephanie. I just randomly open your books and you make me smile. Thank you)

ANYWAY …

First up, is the Baby Surprise Jacket. If I had my way (and had enough yarn in this color) I’d knit a play grey sweater for the boy.. I don’t. So I have grey, a sort of teal-blue and an olive-brown. How am I doing my “stripes” ? Pi. No seriously (after I completed the cuff fullness). I’ve done 3.1 .. I’m on 4. We’ll see how far I go… We’ll see how far I go until I have to look it up. I used to know about 30 digits. Today, well, (3.141592653 … (ok, I had to look it up) 589793 … 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510). I only have a ball and a bit of grey now. but i have more teal and olive. We’ll see how it turns out. I’m nervous. I understand the origami but I am not sure if I had made the smartest yarn choice on the planet. We shall see. I also feel a bit guilty only doing garter stitch for babies.

Next up…

Yup. Swallowtail. Nothing is impossible — if I can make it this far .. I can do anything. Yes, that is a lifeline. I haven’t needed it yet and I’m VERY happy to know it’s there I’ll leave that one in place and add one to this row and then see how I’m doing. I’ve finished Budding Lace 1 and the first run through Budding Lace 2. I want to draw out the second run of Budding Lace 2 to make sure I have it right. I /think/ I grok, but not sure. Also I’m not sure about the bobbles and recall some online discussion months ago about this topic and when I get that far I’ll look into it. So, question … anyone already know how much I’ve knit? I guess I have to break out a spreadsheet. *sigh*

Also, those are the knitpicks needles. Size 4. I only ordered that pair & the cable. I love them. Smooth, pointy. My only complaint is that I don’t have the rest of the set. Do you think I can be good enough so E will get me those AND the Victorian Lace Today? (hah. hah. Hah. Don’t snort milk out your nose.)

Here’s the current plan for E’s socks. Do we think one ball of this yarn is enough for one sock? He’s got size 8ish feet and doesn’t have a runner’s leg (he bikes, the kind where you need to use the pedals) so I’m not too worried about a large calf. We’ll see. I have to swatch & measure his leg. I’m nervous. What if he hates them or they don’t fit. Does anyone have any better ideas?

Last: We are going to head back out West from 19-26th December. Flying into and out of LAS via Jet Blue (my first time with them) and driving around to bits we didn’t see last time (Mojave? Death Valley? Who knows). I’m still scared to bring knitting in carryon. E is convinced it’ll be confiscated. Thus far I’ve been ok but we bicker about it every flight. I only bring wood (Brittany DPNs) or plastic and pack spare in my regular luggage (so I have something to work on, I wish I had a spare pair of sock dpns (Brittany US 1.5/2.5mm — actually i’ll probably buy a spare set next week. they aren’t /that/ expensive and i have a bunch of socks coming up so it wouldn’t be a bad move on my part.). I’m convinced I’ll loose ’em.). Any good yarn stores we should hit? E’s driving so he makes the route… But I suspect we might might end up in LA or San Diego.

  1. When you get to the nupps, when it comes to the p5tog – don’t bother actually trying to p5tog. Slip 3, p2tog, slip those 3 stitches over that decrease one by one. It looks way neater and is a lot easier to deal with.

Oh – and having my pattern row counter for each chart section has been a world of help.

Oh, again, you’ll be able to read your knitting really easily once you’ve gotten a repeat or two done of the budding lace 2 chart. It’s really easy to memorize the repeats and you’ll make your way across fairly quickly. No worries!

  2. If E has size 8 feet there should be plenty of yarn. Sarah made a pair of socks for her husband out of 100 grams and had a bit left over. he has like size 10 feet.

I also wanted to let you know that Westminster is having a moving sale. Right now it is open to yarn shop owners only, but it is suppose to be open to the public for a couple of days. They are in New Hampshire, I believe, and are moving to North Carolina. I don’t have dates yet and I’m not even sure if it would be too far for you, but I can keep you updated if I hear anything more.

  3. Eh, weaving in the ends shouldn’t count anyway ;D

  4. I bought the yarn for Swallowtail but now can’t find my copy of the magazine. Bah.
