The Outstretched Shadow by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory.
I was really looking for The Black Gryphon but while certain local library branches claim to have it, no one actually did. I found this a very well written and had never before read anything by Ms Lackey .. I’ll put a request out for it and because of my enjoyment of The Outstretched Shadow I’ll also include the second of the Obsidian Trilogy, To Light a Candle in that search.
