On Writing On Writing by Stephen King

I expected to hate every minute of this book despite glowing recommendations. I hate horror and scary things, therefore, I hate Stephen King. A logical conclusion, n’est ce pas? Page after page surprised me and blew away my preconceived notions and prejudices about King, his writing, and his thoughts thereof. The beginning, a brief memoir, was just words flowing past me without interest, as I progressed through it, I realized he gave me an unintended gift. While not the life of my parents, it parallels greatly and gave voice to one which can no longer be heard. The second half is a practical advise guide on writing. Some of what King wrote here I passed by, as I write—for better and worse— for myself. I have no reader in mind. The practicalities in this section are written to remind me that common sense should prevail in my writing as I hope it does in my life. Character and dialogue should be real and not fluffed just to add length or changed to highlight my “intellect”. Will this book sitting on a shelf by itself improve my writing? No. the Act of Reading it did, as will all the other books I bury my nose in. This is one work by King I think all will enjoy.
