books and a gut yor

This week I read 3192 pages, which is also my month total. That is an average of 456 pages each book. All info will be after the “jump” …

The Opinionated Knitter by Elizabeth Zimmermann, 128 pages
What is there not to say about this book. Ok, I did decide between this and lunch one day, but it was totally absolutely worth it. I now know how I’m going to go back and edit my friendster/myspace/orkut or whatnot to say who I wish I could have met. Why couldn’t /she/ have been my bubbe?

No Plot? No Problem by Chris Baty, 176 pages
NaNoWriMo ‘06 is in less than a month. I may or may not be playing again this year. I won last year (image will go up sometime, and no you cannot read it). You’ll find out 01 December if I decide to play this time. This was a great read and reminded me that it’s all about having FUN!

Digital Copyright by Jessica Litman, 208 pages
This was another class book. Well, optional. I enjoyed it. Litman raises lots of fascinating arguments and Copyright these days is just so fascinating. Ok, that’s all on that for now.

Sun in Glory by Mercedes Lackey, 349 pages
A bunch of Valdemar short stories. I don’t think I read these before. I enjoyed it. I wish there were more Valdemar stories.

Beyond World’s End by Mercedes Lackey, 402 pages
This is the continuation of Bedlam’s Bard it was ok. Not as good as the first book in the series however. But, yes, I’m hooked. I’ll see what is up next in the queue.

Last of the Wilds by Trudi Canavan, 555 pages
Ms Canavan hooked me in (via geeknoob) with her Black Magician trilogy. This new series is different and enjoyable.

Artscroll Interlinear Machzor – Yom Kippur (Sefard) Metsorah Publications, 1374 pages
well, I really don’t want to pad my numbers, but I /did/ read every page (or at least I think I did). My davening has been in a small funk lately and I was a bit desperate for something to help so it was a toss up between this and one with Rav Soloveitchik zt”l commentary (but they only had ashkenaz and as I dislike juggling two siddurim, I opted for the interlinear). I’ve owned their tehillim (psalms) for years, and it hasn’t really spoken to me. This worked. While I may disagree as much as the next person with some of the translation choices and other ideas of how to publish things, I think that overall they have done a good deal of positive good for those who were brought up on English. No, the English didn’t distract me. During chazzan repetitions I often switched between the English and Hebrew at will and despite the world’s loudest air conditioner I actually followed better than in years past. If you think this might help, please try. But do not feel required to buy a new chumash set just because they have published it. I did a ton of research several years ago, and opted for their Rashi chumash and I still think it was one of the best purchases I have made. [They keep Rashi in Rashi script, and below translate it with normal Hebrew and English. I have learned a good deal from it.]

Again, I wish you all a happy and healthy year of simchas and blessing.

May you not encounter the mother-of-all sinus infections (?, not sure but it hurt like anything) that attacked me during Kol Nidrei for the seventh year running (when I started keeping count). I felt as if I had a hot coal poker stabbing me in the throat and an elephant sitting on my chest. We won’t mention how my teeth feel, I’ll let you know after the previously scheduled routine dentist appointment tomorrow. Perhaps it’s more wisdom teeth making themselves known… The above mentioned AC unit did not assist this at all. I’ve been inhaling peppermint fumes (thank you Y for the recommendation) and tea with honey for the past hour. I feel a bit better.

on this day...
